The Clemson Tigers arrived back in Littlejohn tonight to face the Miami Hurricanes. Both the Tigers and Hurricanes have had a rough stretch of games as of late, hoping to make this game a positive after recently struggling in conference play. Clemson would look to break a four-game losing streak, as well as Miami looking to break a six-game losing streak. This game would be a rollercoaster of events, but Clemson would fight this one out, winning 64-61. Let’s break down how this game panned out.
First Half
Jasmyne Roberts would start off scoring first for Miami. Addie Porter would score first for Clemson, making a quick three-pointer. Right behind her with a three would be Raven Thompson. Thompson would come out hot for the Tigers, scoring five points with three rebounds and three assists in the half. Clemson would start this one early with a three-point show, making four quick ones in the first quarter. Mia Moore would also add to the cause early, hitting a three as well. Moore would become hot for Clemson in the first half, scoring six points. Hannah Kohn would also get back to her normal ways, hitting two threes and ending the half with six points. For Miami, Haley Cavinder would be productive for the Canes, scoring 16 points with three assists. Hanna Cavinder would also put up four points with a team-leading five assists at the half. After a hot start for Clemson in the first quarter, Miami would start making a strong comeback and take the lead midway through the second quarter. Summah Evans, though, would slowly make an impact in the second quarter, scoring four points. Late into the second quarter, Clemson would have six turnovers that Miami capitalized on and would end the half with 13 opposed to Miami’s four. Clemson and Miami would be neck and neck shooting-wise at the end of the half, with Clemson shooting 50% from the field and 45% from three, and Miami shooting 55% from the field and 40% from three. Miami would go into halftime leading, though, with a score of 37-26. The Tigers would need to fight back in the second half in this one.
Second Half
Clemson would come into the second half needing to eliminate turnovers to get back in this one. Raven Thompson would come out scoring first for Clemson. Mia Moore would also look to contribute to the comeback by hitting a three early in the third, then hitting another one early in the fourth. Turnovers would slowly be a problem again in the third quarter, where they started out with five early. Another issue during the second half was fouls, which was an issue last game against Georgia Tech. Clemson would commit eight personal fouls in the third quarter alone. Ahnay Adams would be an impact player for Miami in the second half, scoring eight with four rebounds. Anya Poole would look to be positive amidst the struggles as she would score six. Clemson would slowly make this game an interesting one midway through the fourth quarter, cleaning up both fouls and turnovers. They would slim Miami’s lead down and soon tie the game up. The Tigers would go on a 9-0 scoring run thanks to the production of Raven Thompson and Mia Moore. The duo would rack up a combined 14 rebounds, which was crucial in the fourth-quarter comeback. Loyal McQueen would slowly make her way into this game whenever the Tigers needed her the most. McQueen was held scoreless most of the game until the fourth, where she would put up six points and two rebounds. Raven Thompson would have a key moment after making an amazing play with 1:18 left to put Clemson up by 3 after a made free throw. Thompson would add the final punch, making both free throws with 2 seconds left to give Clemson a three-point lead. Raven would score an impressive 12 points and eight rebounds in second half. The Tigers would win this dogfight over Miami, snapping their four-game losing streak.
Final Results
The Clemson Tigers would come out on top after many people thought the game was over after Miami was up by 16 in the third quarter. Miami would start out strong in the first half, then struggle in the second half as Clemson would take advantage of that and scrap out the win. The Tigers are now 11-9 overall and 4-5 in ACC play. This was a much-needed win and bounce back for Clemson after the past four games. Raven Thompson would be the big impact player that helped Clemson in the win against Miami. She would finish with 17 points and 11 rebounds on the night, shooting 46% from the field. This was much needed after a quite unusual night from Loyal McQueen, who finished with only six points but a much-needed six points at that. Even after a Haley Cavinder 18-point game, Miami wasn’t able to walk away with the win. Clemson will now look to build off of this win as they will now play Syracuse on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Littlejohn Coliseum, and the game can also be watched on ACC Network Extra.
