Basinger, McCubbin anchor the Tigers’ championship run

There’s something about May softball that demands grit, resilience, and a steady hand in the circle. For Clemson, that steady hand came in pairs. Behind a dominant showing from their one-two pitching punch in the circle —Reese Basinger and Brooke McCubbin—the Tigers captured the 2025 ACC Championship, capping off a weekend that showcased the defensive identity they've leaned on all season.

Sure, the bats were lively. But it was pitching and defense that ultimately delivered Clemson its first ACC title ever in program history.

Setting the Tone Early

Clemson opened the tournament with a 7-4 win over Virginia. It was a slugfest at times, but the Tigers held firm when it counted. Basinger and McCubbin split duties in the circle, combining to keep the Cavaliers from mounting any late momentum.

In the semifinals against Virginia Tech—a 10-9 thriller—Clemson’s pitching staff found themselves in high-leverage situations inning after inning. But despite the score, it was defense that kept them alive. Timely plays, great outfield communication, and clutch pitches under pressure kept the Hokies from flipping the game in the late innings.

By the time they reached the title game against Florida State, Clemson’s pitching duo had been battle-tested—and ready.

The Championship Lockdown

The final told a different story. Clemson defeated Florida State 2-1, but the real headline was in the circle.

After starter Reese Basinger turned in a gritty 3.0-inning outing, it was Brooke McCubbin’s time. The senior righty was nearly untouchable, slamming the door on the Seminoles with four scoreless innings in relief. FSU, a perennial power in the ACC and college softball, managed just a single run in the game—an accomplishment that speaks volumes considering their offensive depth.

It was a full-circle moment for Clemson: strong start, flawless finish, and a defense that refused to blink.

The Ace: Reese Basinger’s Commanding Season

There’s a reason Basinger wears the title of 2025 ACC Pitcher of the Year. She’s been Clemson’s workhorse all season long, and when the lights shined the brightest, she stayed true to form.

Across the tournament, she tossed 10.2 innings, allowing eight runs—but only three earned. More impressive? Just one walk and five strikeouts. She kept hitters guessing, leaned on her defense, and never lost her composure.

Now sitting with a 2.92 ERA, a 16-5 record, and 114 strikeouts across 158 innings, Basinger has not only been Clemson’s ace—she’s been their anchor.

The Enforcer: Brooke McCubbin Closes the Door

While Basinger sets the tone, Brooke McCubbin finishes the job.

The senior right-hander has embraced her role as Clemson’s go-to bullpen weapon. In the ACC Tournament, she pitched 10.1 innings, allowed just four earned runs, and struck out four. Her defining moment came in the championship game, shutting down Florida State over four scoreless frames.

McCubbin has mirrored Basinger’s reliability all season, matching her 16-5 record while holding a slightly better 2.75 ERA across 119.2 innings. Her presence has given head coach John Rittman a luxury some teams may not have in the postseason which is two arms who can win any game.

Defense: The Unsung Hero

While Basinger and McCubbin did their jobs in the circle, Clemson’s defense has refused to let anything slip.

Whether it was diving infield stops from Alex Brown, Marian Collins, Maddie Moore, or Julia Knowler, or sure-handed catches in the outfield from Taylor Pipkins, Jamison Brockenbrough, Kylee Johnson, and others—Clemson’s defense was locked in. And behind the plate, Aby Vieira has continued to be a steady presence as the Tigers’ reliable backstop. It all came together in the championship game, where that defensive consistency paid off—holding Florida State to just one run and shutting down multiple potential rallies.

The Road Ahead

With the ACC trophy now in Tiger Town, Clemson sets its sights on the NCAA Tournament, carrying the momentum of a complete team performance. And if they continue to pitch and defend the way they did in Boston, no stage will be too big.

Because when the Tigers take the field, they know they have two aces—and an outstanding defense they can trust behind them.

Now crowned ACC Champions, Clemson Softball will defend their home turf as they host the Clemson Regional at McWhorter Stadium. Kentucky, Northwestern, and USC Upstate are set to come to town, with action beginning Friday, May 16. The Tigers will open postseason play against USC Upstate at 4:30 p.m. on ACC Network. With Clemson playing some of its best softball of the season, you don’t want to miss a moment of the action.
