Last season, the Clemson Softball infield underwent several changes as players shifted positions to optimize Clemson's defensive alignment. At present, the infield appears stable unless proven otherwise. Alex Brown holds the third base position, consistently demonstrating her aptitude for the role. Last season, she achieved a .924 fielding percentage, effectively stopping hard-hit balls and preventing extra bases. Her strong arm helps limit singles. I'm excited to see her continue at third base.

Shortstop is often regarded as one of the most difficult positions on the field, requiring quick reflexes, intelligence, and the ability to cover a large area. Marian Collins seems to excel in all these areas, making her a natural fit for the position. During the Orange and Purple scrimmage on Sunday, she was outstanding in covering her area and handling both routine and challenging plays. Despite being a freshman, Collins does not appear nervous about taking on such an important role.

Maddie Moore returns to second base, where she shines. While shortstop is often seen as the toughest position, second base can be equally demanding due to the dynamics of the game. Last season, Moore had a .947 fielding percentage. I anticipate an All-American season from her at second base, which will be crucial for the Tigers in close games.

Julia Knowler, who played first base as a freshman last year, is expected to return to that position for the Tigers. With a .957 fielding percentage in 34 games, Knowler has the range, quickness, and flexibility required for first base. This position is vital, as a skilled first baseman can prevent errors from errant throws from short or third.

Aby Vieira, the seasoned catcher, is described by Coach Rittman as "the quarterback of the defense." She is well-suited for the role, with a high IQ; she is the one who has to set the defenses and see the game from her perspective. Aby will be catching some new pitchers this season following the graduation of Valerie Cagle, Regan Spencer, and Millie Thompson. Her quickness and ability to block tough pitches make her a natural catcher. Last season, she had a .988 fielding percentage. Aby is a field leader with a deep understanding of the game.

We know that lineups can change due to many reasons, but looking at the players that are available, this looks to be the best possible lineup to get the season started, and to hopefully stay consistent throughout the season. A great infield that has chemistry, skills, and knowlege can be all the difference in wins and losses.
